Project in Practice: Camping Bakkum
At the edge of the North Holland dunes, where sand meets forest, Camping Bakkum stands as a symbol of the future of sustainable recreation.
What was once a simple car park is now becoming a living example of what Nature Positive Solar Carparks can be.
Elegant solar carports rise above the parking zones, providing shade for visitors while generating clean solar energy. Around them, a carpet of dune grasses, bee-friendly herbs, and rainwater infiltration zones takes shape — next to the battery that stores power for use across the campsite. The energy produced directly powers the campsite’s EV charging infrastructure and on-site facilities.
Excess energy is stored in a smart battery system, allowing the park to smooth out energy peaks and reduce its dependence on the grid.
“What we are creating here is more than a solar project,” says Marius Kuipers, Technical Designer at Plenty Planet. “It’s an ecosystem where nature, technology, and recreation reinforce one another.”
This vision is shared by Denise Boumans, Ecosystem Specialist at Plenty Planet — the EPC partner responsible for the project’s technical realisation — who is actively involved in shaping the group’s nature-positive design approach.
Camping Bakkum shows that sustainability and experience can go hand in hand. The carports provide cooling on warm days, attract butterflies and birds, and supply campers with clean energy. At night, the stored sunlight gently illuminates the paths — subtly integrated into the dune landscape.
